Achonry N.S. is a Catholic primary school in the Diocese of Achonry. The school is located approximately 12km from Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo.
A new extension was built and opened in 2013. The extension provided us with two new classrooms, a learning support room, staffroom, principal’s office, secretary’s office and store rooms.
At present we have eight teaching staff employed with us in Achonry N.S. which include two SET teachers. We are also fortunate to have two Special Needs Assistants, a school secretary and school caretaker on our staff.
Achonry N.S. operates a healthy eating policy, and parents are asked to support this initiative.
During the school year 2012-2013, all of the staff completed the Incredible Years Programme. This programme focuses on encouraging and promoting positive behaviour within the school. The programme has enabled the staff to put structure and uniformity to a positive behaviour plan within the school, the implementation of which has proved to be a resounding success.
The school prides itself in providing an ‘all round’ education for all of its pupils, with equal emphasis being put on both academic and social development. The school is steeped in a GAA culture and partakes in Cumann na mBunscol, Mini Sevens and hurling events. Other sports include athletics, tennis, swimming, yoga, basketball, volleyball and tag rugby.
Pupils regularly partake in school quizzes as well as art and environmental competitions. The children are also receiving the benefits of I.T. in the primary school curriculum.
Overall, Achonry N.S. provides a secure and happy environment in which children can learn and develop to the best of their potential.
